VS Code extension

Install and sign in

Get the extension from the Marketplace or a downloaded file, then connect your account.

There are two ways to install SiliCode for VS Code: straight from VS Code's Extensions view, or from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Both give you the same extension. Pick whichever is easier on your machine, then sign in once.

Install from inside VS Code

This is the quickest route, and VS Code keeps the extension up to date for you.

  1. 1

    Open the Extensions view

Click the Extensions icon in the Activity Bar, or press Ctrl+Shift+X (Cmd+Shift+X on a Mac).

  2. 2

    Search for SiliCode

Type SiliCode in the search box. Look for SiliCode for VS Code published by SiliCode. If you want to be certain you have the right one, search for its identifier instead: silicode.silicode-vscode.

    Press Install

A few seconds later the SiliCode icon appears in the Activity Bar. You do not need to restart VS Code.

Install from the Marketplace

The Install for VS Code link under the prompt box on our home page opens the extension's Marketplace page. From there you have two options.

Use the Install button

Press Install on the Marketplace page. Your browser asks to open VS Code; allow it, and VS Code shows the extension with its own Install button. Press that and you are done.

Download the file and install it yourself

This is the way to go when VS Code cannot reach the Marketplace, for example on a machine behind a strict proxy, or when you want to keep a copy of the exact version you installed.

  1. 1

    Download the .vsix file

On the Marketplace page, open Version History and choose Download next to the latest version. You get a single file named like silicode-vscode-<version>.vsix, where <version> is the version you downloaded.

  3. 3

    Choose Install from VSIX

Click the … menu at the top of the Extensions view and pick Install from VSIX…, then select the file you downloaded. You can also run Extensions: Install from VSIX… from the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac), or drag the file onto the Extensions view.

    Reload if VS Code asks

VS Code sometimes offers to reload the window after installing from a file. Accept it and the SiliCode icon appears in the Activity Bar.

If you prefer the terminal, the same file installs with one command:

Terminal
code --install-extension silicode-vscode-<version>.vsix

Use the name of the file you actually downloaded in place of silicode-vscode-<version>.vsix.

Updates

An extension installed from a file is not updated automatically. When a new version comes out, download it and install it the same way; your sign-in and settings are kept.

Click the SiliCode icon in the Activity Bar to open the panel. Sign in the same way you do on the website; you stay signed in until you sign out or your session expires, so you are not asked again every time VS Code starts.

With your email and password

Enter your email or username and your password, then press Sign in. The eye button shows the password while you type, if you want to check it.

With Google or GitHub

If you sign in to SiliCode with Google or GitHub, use the matching button. The buttons appear when that sign-in method is available on SiliCode, exactly as on the website.

  1. 1

Press Continue with Google (or GitHub)

Your browser opens on the SiliCode website, and the panel waits for you to finish there. Press Cancel in the panel to stop waiting.

  2. 2

    Sign in with the provider

If you are already signed in to the website, this step is skipped. The first time you use Google or GitHub, the website asks you to accept the terms, the same as signing up there.

  3. 3

    Press Connect

The website shows which account SiliCode for VS Code will use. After Connect, your browser asks to open VS Code; allow it. The panel signs in on its own, and you can close the browser tab.

Your password stays in the browser

When you sign in through the browser, the extension never sees your password or your Google or GitHub account. It receives its own sign-in for VS Code, and signing out of the extension does not sign you out of the website.

If you do not have an account yet

Accounts are created on the website only. Use Create an account under the sign-in form; it opens the sign-up page in your browser. Come back to VS Code once your account is ready. See Create your account.

Updating and uninstalling

Installed from the Extensions view or the Marketplace, the extension updates itself like any other. To remove it, find SiliCode for VS Code in the Extensions view and choose Uninstall. Uninstalling leaves your account, your chats and every file it wrote into your workspace untouched. To sign out without uninstalling, use the account menu or the SiliCode: Sign Out command.
